The love of parents for their children is one of the most valuable things in life. It is a pure, unconditional, and deep affection. However, that love must be expressed in the right way. If not, it can become the cause of serious problems in a child's development. Loving a child in the wrong way not only affects their psychology but also hampers the child's overall development, leading to unpredictable consequences.

Signs That You Are Loving Your Child the Wrong Way

One of the common manifestations of loving a child the wrong way is overindulgence. Many parents tend to satisfy every demand of their child without considering the long-term consequences. They do not set clear boundaries or rules, making children prone to dependence, a lack of responsibility, and not knowing how to respect others. As a result, children can become irritable and angry when parents and those around them do not meet their needs.

Another common manifestation is overprotection. Many parents worry their child will face difficulties or be hurt when participating in any activity, so they forbid their child from experiencing and playing. This not only reduces the child's ability to be independent but also leaves them without the skills to cope with life's challenges.

Moreover, imposing high expectations is another manifestation of love that is not right. Some parents believe their child is exceptionally talented and always expect them to achieve high results in school or elsewhere. Therefore, when the results are not as they hoped, they feel disappointed in their child. This makes the child feel pressured, anxious, and can lead to a loss of self-confidence, or even depression.

How to show love in the right way?

To avoid negative consequences in raising children, parents need to change the way they show love as well as set limits in their actions. First, you need to understand and respect your children, and listen to understand their needs and desires, thereby creating a healthy family relationship. Next, parents should only provide their child with what is truly necessary; “hữu cầu tất ứng” will cause the child not to value what is bought for them.

Additionally, rules for living are also very important. These rules should be appropriate for the child's age and ability, and must be explained clearly so the child understands and complies. This helps the child understand that freedom comes with responsibility and that every action has its consequences. For example, when going to the supermarket with parents, the child may only buy one item, meaning they are not allowed to buy a second item no matter how much they whine or tantrum.

Finally, parents should encourage independence and personal development of their children. Rather than doing everything for them, you should give them opportunities to experience, solve problems on their own, and learn from mistakes through extracurricular activities or by tackling challenging toys such as LEGO.

Parental love helps children develop steadily and healthily. However, for a child to mature in character as well, parents need to express love in a correct and reasonable way. A well-directed love will create a happy environment and help the child become more confident.
