Child gaming addiction is no longer unfamiliar in this era of developing digital technology. Games are a form of entertainment, but young children are often drawn in by the game’s storyline as well as the experiential challenges and valuable items within the game. Moreover, games create emotional highs that excite the child. Spending too much time focusing on games can gradually affect the child’s daily routine and their long-term personality.

Why do children get addicted to games?

People are increasingly demanding a higher quality of life, which puts heavy pressure on parents. Therefore, sometimes parents neglect paying attention to their children, causing them to seek other sources of entertainment, with online games being a prime example.

The growing market brings countless games with diverse ways to play, allowing children to join in intense battles. In particular, rare, beautiful items with high value are an invisible lure, continually drawing players in and making them immerse themselves. Children are not mature enough to resist that attraction, so they easily become gaming-addicted.

Signs of a child addicted to games

The first sign is that the child spends too much time playing games, leading to loss of control even though it may affect work and study. More seriously, the player may isolate themselves from real-world social relationships.

Another obvious sign is forgetfulness and lack of concentration, accompanied by persistent sleep deprivation, fatigue, and in some cases neglect of eating. Finally, the child’s mood can become irritable when not allowed to play games.

The double-edged sword of gaming

Awareness and control of gaming habits are crucial to balance entertainment with responsibilities in real life. It can bring many benefits if played correctly and in moderation.

Consequences of a child’s gaming addiction

The invisible, irresistible pull can eventually bring serious harm, with the first impact appearing in the body

Insomnia and weight change

  • The child may eat not to satisfy hunger or eat without realizing how much they have eaten. In the long term, weight gain or loss is likely to occur.
  • When the body reaches its limit, the child may swing between “ravenous hunger with uncontrolled eating” and “physical weakness – malnutrition – reduced immunity.”
  • Physical health is not ensured, so the psyche may suffer, leading to depression, anxiety, poor concentration, and reduced social interaction.

Effects on the child’s vision

  • “Eye strain - dizziness - eye pain” are the first symptoms after long periods of focusing on electronic screens.
  • In the long term, gaming addiction may require wearing glasses to improve vision.
  • Lack of confidence and reduced social interaction due to poor vision. In studies the child also becomes less focused because they cannot clearly see the words on the board.

“Hooked” on games

  • The diverse game market offers many contents that can be unrealistic. However, compelling themes such as fantasy or magic exist; worldwide there are many cases of long-term gaming addiction leading to “hooked on games,” which can affect the child’s life.
  • The child cannot distinguish between reality and simulated illusion. Unrealistic, non-scientific content such as “dying and reviving” or “finding ways to travel back in time” can seriously affect the child’s real-life life.

Games are not all bad

Games can be used for entertainment, and some simple-content games with uncomplicated gameplay can help players unwind after stressful periods and bring several benefits.

  • Improve thinking and problem-solving skills: Games constantly require players to plan and devise reasonable strategies to overcome challenges. The gameplay presents complex situations that require players to solve problems, training thinking, and stimulating logical reasoning and analytical abilities.
  • Develop social skills: Some community-based games require players to establish and expand relationships to coordinate with others, thereby developing teamwork and communication skills.

  • Entertainment and stress relief: Games are an effective form of entertainment, helping players relax and reduce anxiety after work or study.
  • Stimulates vision and reflexes: During gameplay, players need to observe carefully as they overcome challenges and solve puzzles from the tiniest details. This stimulates detail recognition and enhances visual reflexes.
  • Learning and education: Many games are designed for educational purposes, helping players learn new knowledge and broaden skills during gameplay. Some foreign-made games require players to read and understand the storyline, thereby improving foreign language practice.
  • Develop management skills: Some business and finance simulation games help players understand operations, set schedules, and manage economics sensibly.
  • Require patience: The game's difficulty increases over time, so players need to take time to devise solutions to overcome challenges.
  • When played in moderation, games can yield positive benefits. However, without proper time management over the long term, games can easily become addictive and affect real life.

Real-life experiences still outperform activities in the virtual game world. Therefore, when children become addicted to games, parents should implement remedies to help them quickly return to a regular routine, reintegrate into life, and build a long-term foundation of knowledge for the future.

Are there ways to prevent children from getting addicted to games?

Yes! Use “time weaving – time control.” If parents know how to distribute time scientifically, the child will not be overwhelmed by a dense schedule, organizing small tasks to participate in interleaved activities so the child does not have long idle periods, preventing them from thinking about games too much.

Parents should set aside time at the end of the day to talk with the child more, asking about classwork to understand academic progress, and learning about the child’s relationships to intervene timely. This also strengthens family bonds and helps better understand the child’s thoughts during this developmental stage. If the child shows severe gaming addiction, parents can recognize it early and refer them to child psychology specialists for treatment

We will avoid the situation of trẻ nghiện game. When the child is guided correctly and under parental control, playing games will not be bad. With the development of digital technology, there will be jobs arising from games that generate profits; if there is a reasonable initial setup by parents, and routines and use of time are scientific, then in the long term it can still be a solid foundation for future work.
