- 2 paper cups
- 1–2 m of string
- A needle or small wooden toothpick
How to do:
Make a small hole in the bottom of each cup, thread the string through, and secure it with the needle. Tighten the string and have the child try talking—listen at the other end.
What happens?

Experiment: Sound Through Water – Hear Like a Fish
Materials:
- 1 basin of water
- 2 metal spoons
- A length of string
How to do:
Tie the string to the spoon handle, loop the string around a finger, and cover your ears. Tap the spoon against a hard object while holding it.
What happens?
The child will hear a clear “clang” traveling through the water to the ear. The watery medium helps sound travel faster, giving the sensation of hearing from underwater!
