The space shuttle is used to carry astronauts into space, and is used by the United States National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) for human spaceflight. Like most aircraft, the space shuttle is made of conductive aluminum, which protects and shields internal systems. However, during launch the space shuttle releases a stream of hot air as it ascends, and this stream of air can conduct lightning because it provides a path for electrical current to ground. For safety, the Space Shuttle will not be launched in conditions where it could be struck by lightning.
