Part three of "Avatar", named Avatar: Fire and Ash, has made a big splash opening with a global gross of $345 million. This is the year's second-biggest opening, only after Zootopia 2. The film has grossed $257 million from international markets and $88 million in North America, becoming a notable box office phenomenon.
Impressive international box office
The film premiered on December 19, drawing strong attention from viewers, especially those aged 13 and older. According to Variety, China leads with $57.6 million, followed by France ($21.4 million), Germany ($18 million), South Korea ($13.6 million), and the United Kingdom ($11.9 million). In Vietnam, the film surpassed 100 billion VND in just the first three days of release, recording 25 billion VND in box office with over 200,000 tickets sold.
The appeal of premium screening formats
One of the factors driving Avatar: Fire and Ash's appeal is that the film is shown in IMAX and 3D formats, accounting for about 66% of the global box office. Specifically, the IMAX format contributed $43.6 million, making it one of the biggest launches in IMAX history.
Nevertheless, the opening gross for Part Three still lags far behind Part Two, Avatar: The Way of Water, which had $435 million on its opening day. This creates significant pressure for the third film, as the two previous installments have each surpassed $2 billion in global box office.
Plot and audience reactions
Avatar: Fire and Ash continues the story of Jake Sully and Neytiri's family after the great loss, the death of their eldest son Neteyam. Colonel Miles Quaritch, Jake's longtime foe, relentlessly pursues the Sully family and allies with the Tro People, a militant Na'vi tribe. This is a fiery clash between the forces on the planet Pandora.
The film has earned praise for its visual effects and production design. With scenes depicting the seas, forests, and fire, James Cameron has recreated a vivid, visually stunning Pandora where colossal creatures, vehicles, and weapons appear clearly in three dimensions. However, some critics feel the first half is somewhat familiar, reminiscent of the previous installment. Still, Cameron boldly expands the story and adds many new character arcs.

While Avatar: Fire and Ash has had an impressive start, breaking the records of the previous installments remains a significant challenge. The previous film, Avatar: The Way of Water, grossed $2.3 billion globally, while the first film reached $2.92 billion.
With a production budget of around $350 million and marketing costs up to $150 million, Avatar: Fire and Ash will need to sustain long-term appeal to ensure commercial viability.
