The kite season has arrived; let's make mini kites from materials you already have at home and, with your family, fly those colorful kites up into the blue sky!
Here are detailed instructions on how to make mini kites using paper, broom sticks, and common materials you can easily find at home. These kites are not only simple and easy to make but also a fun activity to entertain yourself or do with young children.

Making mini kites from paper and bamboo sticks taken from a broom, or from sturdy straws
Materials needed
-
Paper (A4 paper, colored paper, or newspaper works)
-
Thin bamboo sticks (cut from an old broom handle) or sturdy drinking straws
-
String or thin nylon thread
-
Glue (white glue), tape, or paste
-
Scissors
-
Ruler and pencil
Steps
Prepare the kite frame:
-
Take two bamboo sticks from the broom handle, and cut into two pieces: about 20 cm long (vertical frame) and 15 cm long (horizontal frame).
-
Tie the two sticks into a cross shape with string, so that the horizontal stick sits about one-third of the vertical length from the top (roughly 5-7 cm from the tip).
Cut and glue the paper:
-
Place the frame on the paper and trace the traditional diamond shape with a pencil.
-
Cut the paper along the traced line.
-
Securely glue the bamboo frame to the paper with glue or tape, firmly fixing all four ends of the bamboo.
- Cut the paper into suitably long pieces to make the kite’s tail and sides.

Make the tether lines:
-
Tie a short string about 20-30 cm long to each end of the horizontal bar to create anchor lines; these will connect to the flying line.
-
Attach a longer flying line (usually 1-2 meters) to the anchor point.
Decorate: Use colored markers, colored paper, or cut-out patterns to make the kite more lively.
Test fly: Choose a breezy day, hold the line and run against the wind to let the kite rise.

Making mini kites without a frame (from paper and string)
Materials needed
-
Colored paper or thin newspaper
-
String
-
Tape
-
Scissors
Steps
Cut the paper:
-
Cut the paper into a rectangle of any size.
-
Fold the sheet into four to create creases, then unfold. Fold in half, draw and cut as shown.

Tape along the sharp corner and punch a hole to tie the string.

Attach the string: Thread a short string through the two holes just punched in the paper to create the kite’s anchor. Attach the flying line to the middle of the anchor line.

Create the kite tail: Cut strips of paper about 20-30 cm long and glue them on to form a tail, helping balance the kite when flying.

Fly the kite: This type is very light, suitable for light wind. A light run is enough for it to fly.
