Whenever mom and dad put away the tablet, the child's temper tantrums make the whole family tense. Many parents wonder what to replace the iPad with for the child so the child cooperates happily without feeling pressured.
Sometimes, children demand the iPad not only because the digital content is appealing but also because there isn't a sufficiently engaging alternative activity for them to switch to. Instead of simply asking the child to turn off the screen, parents can prepare engaging activities that give the child a reason to voluntarily leave the iPad and explore the world outside.
Why does rushing to take away the iPad cause the child to resist?
Young children aged 1 to 5 years always have a need to explore and a desire to imitate adult behavior. When they see parents holding a phone or typing on a computer, they also become curious to press and own a device of their own.
According to American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), video content with too-fast pacing and many rapid effects can make it harder for young children to process information right after watching.
For children who are used to devices, switching immediately to another quiet activity can be challenging. Therefore, parents can prepare engaging toys with sounds, buttons, and hand operations to help the child transition more smoothly.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), babies under 1 year should not sit and watch passive screens; for children aged 2 to 4 years, parents should limit screen time to a maximum of 1 hour per day (and as little as possible).
Instead, the WHO encourages the whole family to be active with the child, read together, and talk more to fill the child's schedule.

3 ways to help your child move away from screens more gently
-
Separate toys from mealtime: Parents should limit using toys or electronic devices to coax the child to eat. Help the child focus on the meal and reserve interactive toys for other suitable times in the day.
-
Spend the first 15 minutes together with your child: When introducing a new toy, parents should sit at eye level, have the child press a key or turn the steering wheel to spark excitement, then step back to watch as the child plays independently.
-
Parents set an example: Children always observe adults' habits. When parents actively put away their phones during shared activities, the child will more easily join in real-world play.
Common questions from parents when looking for iPad replacement toys
Will the child get bored quickly with these simulated toys?
Interactive educational toys usually come with multiple play modes, sounds, and diverse hand interactions, giving the child more exploration options instead of just receiving one-dimensional images.
However, long-term interest still largely depends on age and each child's personal preferences.
What criteria should you use to choose iPad replacement toys for your child?
Parents should prioritize toys with two-way feedback (clear sounds, responsive physical buttons), safe materials with rounded edges, and clear age classifications.
